WATCH LIVE: Trump accuses China of ‘election meddling’
The US president has announced the release of declassified intelligence on alleged vulnerabilities in voting infrastructure
US President Donald Trump is delivering a primetime White House address on election security, announcing the immediate release of declassified intelligence documents on alleged vulnerabilities in America’s voting infrastructure.
“Every American deserves to know that when they cast their vote, that vote will be counted accurately,” Trump said, arguing that cheating and foreign interference should be “virtually impossible.”
Trump claimed that the existing system “falls catastrophically short” and is dangerously exposed to hacking. He said the documents reveal “shocking vulnerabilities in our election infrastructure” and accused China of carrying out “the largest compromise of election data in history” during the 2020 election cycle.
The White House said the released findings span January 2020 to June 2026 and identify voter-registration databases, electronic pollbooks and official election websites as particularly vulnerable.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt previewed the speech as a “major address to the nation,” urging Americans to tune in. She said Trump would present findings that “will shock you” and argue that changes are needed to make US elections safer and more secure.
The administration has recently pressed Congress to approve stricter voter-identification and citizenship-verification requirements. Leavitt described election security as a nonpartisan issue and said Republicans and Democrats alike should support safeguards intended to strengthen public confidence in voting.
